You can’t drink this. You can’t drink that. Women are being put on trial for engaging in unhealthy behaviors during pregnancy. Of course, things like doing drugs or drinking alcohol are indeed very dangerous to your baby. After all, everything a pregnant woman eats, drinks, and breathes will reach her fetus through the placenta.

Now, the question is: Are vitamins included? What are the vitamins recommended for pregnant women? What will be the effects? Here’s the real truth about the vitamins pregnant women can and can’t get away right now.

Vitamins Essential for Moms-To-Be

1. Vitamin C

This vitamin is important in the manufacturing of your baby’s blood vessels, bones, and the whole skeletal system. Vitamin C helps produce collagen, a protein responsible for producing your baby’s skeletal foundation. Vitamin C is also known as skin food because it feeds your skin as well as your baby’s skin with the right nutrients to help build healthy skin. As an antioxidant, it can also help you and your baby fight free radicals or delay the oxidation process.

Since your body can’t produce vitamin C, unlike most animals, and it can’t store it either, it is important that you get your daily supply of vitamins from supplements and foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus foods, vegetables, and fruits.

2. Foliate

Foliate, a B vitamin, is another nutrient necessary for the production of healthy red blood cells. And not everybody gets enough.

Foliate is found primarily in fresh fruits and vegetables, and people who eat a lot of canned or pre-packaged foods can become deficient. Pregnant women who live alone and don’t want to cook for one are especially at risk for anemia caused by foliate deficiency.

Health experts suggest that a few servings of fresh fruits and vegetables every day are the best bet for prevention. If you can’t bear Brussels sprouts, consider taking a daily nutritional supplement with 400 micrograms, the Daily Value of folic acid (the supplemental form of foliate).

3. Vitamin A

A daily intake of vitamin A between 10,000 and 15,000 IU (international units) may also provide healthy bones, skin, and eyes to your baby as well as healthy cells needed to build your baby’s internal organs.

However, pregnant women should speak with their doctors before supplementing their diet with vitamin A. Studies show that excessive intake of vitamin A can bring about birth defects, such as ear and eye abnormalities, microcephaly or small head, cleft lip and palate, hydrocephaly or enlargement of the fluid-filled paces in the brain, mental retardation, or heart defects.

Statistics show that pregnant women who consume more than 10,000 IU of vitamin A can lead to birth defects in 1 of every 57 infants. Also, excessive intake of vitamin A during pregnancy can cause higher risks of miscarriage.

4. Vitamin D

When researchers in a certain study measured levels of vitamin D in pregnant women, they saw that the more vitamin D in the blood, the better the insulin was at delivering glucose to the muscles. So vitamin D is an important nutrient for many other reasons as well, such as helping produce healthy teeth, tissue, and bones for your baby and may help your body derail diabetes. Studies show that diabetes in pregnant women can be very risky and may even cause birth defects or morbidity.

Though vitamin D is produced when your skin is exposed to sunlight, a more reliable year-round source is milk. Four 8-ounce glasses of fat-free milk everyday can get you to the Daily Value of 400 IU. Alternatively, you can supplement your diet with 400 IU of vitamin D.

5. Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 facilitates the formation of hemoglobin, the red blood cell component that carries oxygen through the bloodstream. During pregnancy, more hemoglobin is required to supply your baby with oxygen. And the fetus also uses this vitamin to build its own blood supply.

Your body needs vitamin B12 to create red blood cells. This vitamin is found in chicken, red meat, dairy products, eggs, and fish, but not in plant foods. Most people get plenty, but super-strict vegetarians who don’t eat any non-vegetable foods are at risk for a deficiency of vitamin B12 and anemia. The solution is to take a daily nutritional supplement that contains at least double the Daily Value of B12 (six micrograms).

Keep in mind that baby’s health depends on the mothers way of getting the proper amount of vitamins, so pregnant women can’t afford to skimp. Hence, pregnant women should make sure that they get enough of the nutrients every day.

Last weekend when we wait for out queue to see the doctor, I read some leaflet in the hospital… It state about the diabetes that might occurred to pregnancy women… hmmm, make me feel worried… well, this is our first baby and we don’t want anything bad happen…

I found some articles about this and select one of them to share it here. Hope it benefited all of you.

Diabetes Information and Tips

We all very well know that too many people suffer from diabetes, which can be a killer disease, but many of us do not know the answer to that elementary question, ‘What is diabetes? Here we basically try to answer that question. What is diabetes?Diabetes mellitus condition is, to put it very plainly, characterized by high levels of blood sugar. So what is actually diabetes caused by? This is mainly caused by the levels of insulin, when it becomes too low. There are mainly three types of diabetes: type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Now that here we have answered, very generally, the question ‘What is diabetes,’ let us go on to the first type of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes

Insulin, which our body needs to control the levels of sugar in our blood, is created by the beta cells in the pancreas, or, more specifically, in the Islets of Langerhans, which is a part of the pancreas. In Type 1 diabetes, these cells die because of the autoimmune system attacks it. This is the kind of diabetes that you normally see in children, though it is seen in adults, as well. Careful monitoring of the blood sugar levels and replacement of insulin is essentially the treatment for type 1 diabetes. While the treatment that cannot be stopped – it only controls and regulates, it does not cure – patients with type 1 diabetes can live a normal and long life as long as they take the necessary precautions.

Type 2 diabetes

The next thing that stems from the question ‘What is diabetes’ is; what Type 2 diabetes is. This combines the resistance to insulin to lack of secretion of insulin, which is harder to handle than Type 1 diabetes.

For this, first, the resistance must to be decreased or eliminated, which can be done through proper diet and exercise, and then the same treatment as for Type 1 diabetes can be administered.

Gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes is fairly common and is the sort of diabetes that affects women during pregnancy. Quite often, it might simply go away once the baby is born but it generally needs to be regulated carefully during the pregnancy to avoid complications.

most important thing you can do to protect your baby
and help to promote good health. Best of all, breast
feeding is free.

Along with saving you money on HMR (Human Milk
Replacement), breast feeding can also help you to
keep your medical bills down. Babies that are fed
with formula get sicker more often and more seriously
than babies that are breast fed They also have more
ear infections, respiratory infections, and other
problems.

This can be even more true if your family has had a
history of allergies. When a baby is breast fed, the
antibodies pass on from the mother to the baby,
helping to protect against illness and allergies. As
the baby’s system matures, his body will begin to
make it’s own antibodies, and he’ll be more equipped
to handle sensitivities of food.

Sucking on the breast will also help with the
development or jaw alignment and the development of
the cheekbone. For this very reason, there is less
of the need for costly orthodontic work when the
child gets older.

Unlike formula, breast milk is always ready, always
available, convenient, and always the right temperature
for feeding. Plus, it contains all of the vitamins
and minerals your growing baby needs, saving you a
lot of money.

Breast feeding also offers many benefits for the mom
as well. The baby sucking at the breast will cause
contractions right after birth, leading to less
bleeding for the mom, and helping her uterus to it’s
shape before pregnancy much faster.

Breast feeding will also burn calories, so a mom can
lose weight much faster than if she fed her baby with
a bottle. Breast feeding will also create a special
bond with the mother and the baby – which is one
thing formula simpy cannot do.

Many women find that they can eat whatever they may
like during breast feeding. Even though it’s true
that some stongly favored foods can change the
taste of your milk, many babies seem to enjoy the
varieties of breast milk flavors. Occasionally,
your baby may get cranky at the breast after you
eat certain foods. If you notice this happening,
simply avoid that particular food.

The most common offenders duing breast feeding
include chocolate, spices, citrus fruits, garlic,
chili, lime, gassy vegetables, and fruits with
laxative type effects, such as prunes and cherries.

You can have a cup or two of coffee a day, although
too much caffeine can interfere with your baby’s
sleep and even make him or her cranky. Keep in
mind, caffeine is found in many soda’s, tea, and
even over the counter type medicine as well.

It’s okay to have an alcoholic beverage every now
and the, although having more than one drink can
increase your blood alcohol level, putting the
alcohol into your breast milk.

If you are planning to have more than one drink
at a time, it’s best to wait two hours or more
per drink before you resume any type of nursing
or breast feeding. There is no need to pump
and dump unless your breasts are full and its
time to feed your baby. While breast feeding,
any type of heavy drinking should be avoided.

Before you actually omit any foods from your
diet, you should talk to your doctor. If you
avoid certain foods and it causes a nutritional
imbalance, you may need to see a nutritionist
for advice on taking other foods or getting
nutritional supplements.

We examine how a proper pregnancy diet is crucial not only to the baby, but the mother as well. The importance of a planned diet program can make a huge difference in the physical and mental state of the mother-to-be and her child.

There are a lot of things we gamble on but the one thing you would never gamble on is the health of your children. This is true even before they are born. Increasing your chances for a healthy baby is not gambled on the roll of a dice, but with careful planning and attention to prenatal nutrition. What you want is the best likelihood of a successful and stress free nine months. A proper pregnancy diet plan will give your baby the best chance for a healthy beginning.

No mother-to-be is willing to take a chance on her baby’s health. That means following a program that gives the best options for the mother to provide the utmost care and attention for her future bundle of joy. Sound pregnancy plans provide the extra nutrition and calories needed by the body and the developing baby. It’s important to eat the right amount of calories and restrict weight gain to only what is necessary for the baby’s growth. How much you eat depends on several factors.

- How active you are throughout the day.

- Whether you do moderate physical exertion or exercise.

- How much you weigh before the pregnancy.

- What trimester your pregnancy is in.

- Whether you are carrying more than one baby.

The best pregnancy diet will center on maintaining a healthy weight throughout the maternity. It will also have the goal of eliminating encounters with a low birth weight, poor immune system, developing nervous systems and diet related birth defects.

Maintaining a healthy diet that increases the odds of a healthy baby, involves a good deal more than just understanding what you should eat. Basically you know you should get enough folic acid, calcium and vitamins. You also must know what to avoid eating or drinking to prevent problems. To increase the best likelihood of a successful term, a smart pregnancy diet plan will include warnings about foods that may cause problems.

Do not eat certain types of fish that may contain high levels of mercury, such as mackerel.

Do not drink alcohol because it can cause the baby to be born underweight or even have a form of brain impairment.

Restrict caffeine consumption.

Never eat undercooked or raw foods. (Vegetables are the exception)

It’s vital that you should know during the pregnancy about some foods that carry food borne illnesses and should obviously be avoided as much as possible. Undercooked meats, raw fish such as sushi and raw eggs should never be eaten while pregnant. Illnesses from these foods can cause fever, vomiting, diarrhea and can directly affect the health of your unborn baby. When you’re pregnant, you can be more susceptible to the illnesses these foods can carry and your response can be heightened by the pregnancy.

Doing some research of your own can provide more insight into what would be the ideal diet plan for both the mother and baby. When setting up such a particular eating program, remember that the best pregnancy diet will cover all aspects of nutrition that equates to a healthy pregnancy and baby.

Getting your body back to normal after a pregnancy can be a tricky business. When it comes to stretch marks and loose skin, there is no real effective method of treatment other than the surgical option of an abdominoplasty, a.k.a. a tummy tuck. Your skin is capable of expanding to accommodate a gradual weight gain, but when you are pregnant, it must expand relatively quickly to accommodate the growth of the baby. Consequently, the deeper layers of skin may tear forming thin white lines across your stomach. You may become frustrated (to say the least), and many women experience a big blow to their self esteem. However, a tummy tuck can remove most stretch marks and tighten any loose skin. In fact, deciding to go for a tummy-tuck seems a reasonable course of action considering that 130, 000 tummy tucks were performed in the United States in 2005.

Before jumping onto the tummy tuck train, some important issues should be considered. A tummy tuck requires invasive surgery; therefore information on the matter should be gathered in order to determine whether or not it will truly benefit your life.

Tummy tucks can leave permanent scars

The surgery will leave a scar that runs from hip to hip, unless you have decided on a mini-tuck, in which case the scar will be about 6 inches long. A scar can take up to 9 months to fade, and until then, it will actually appear to worsen. However, the incision is made along natural creases in your skin, and is easily covered by underwear and bikinis.

Tummy tucks can cause problems with future pregnancies

Most surgeons will advise their patients to wait until after their last pregnancy before undergoing abdominal plastic surgery. The body’s expansion during a pregnancy can cause the stomach muscles to separate again; so if you are planning more than one child, it is best to put the tummy tuck on hold.

Tummy tucks are not magical

If you are unhappy with the look of your body, a tummy tuck can be a step in helping you to achieve your ideal figure. However, because of its highly invasive nature, you must be prepared to take good care of your brand new tummy. The recovery time can take up to 3 weeks. You must protect your stomach from the sun before going under the knife. Smokers will need to put away their lighters for 2 weeks before and after the surgery. Exercise can help speed up the healing process (although not immediately after the surgery). A healthy diet is important as well, but nothing too severe as your body needs the appropriate nutrition in order to properly heal.

Do some research

It is important to choose a surgeon who is properly qualified. Not only must he/she be board certified, but also certified by a reputable board. Start by looking into the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Also verify that your surgeon is qualified to perform several kinds of abdominal plastic surgery and not just tummy tucks.

If a full traditional tummy tuck seems too daunting, and/or too expensive, you could opt for a mini-tummy tuck. The surgery is less invasive, recovery time is shorter, and the scar is smaller. It is worth a consideration if you are unhappy with the post-pregnant state of your body.

Bacterial vaginosis is an overgrowth of bacteria that are normally in the vagina. Bacterial vaginosis can cause serious problems in pregnancy including premature labor, premature birth, infection of the amniotic fluid, and infection of the uterus after delivery. Bacterial vaginosis occurs most during the reproductive years although women of all ages are susceptible to this infection that affects the vagina, urethra, bladder, and skin in the genital area. Bacterial vaginosis is the most common type of vaginal infection.

The main symptom of bacterial vaginosis is a fishy smell in the genital area. Symptoms may include: A watery, pearly grey discharge instead of normal vaginal secretions. A strong or unusual odour from the vagina. Symptoms include profuse vaginal discharge that can be white, gray, yellow, or green. Symptoms should disappear within a few days.

Risk of bacterial vaginosis increases with menopause, and in women with diabetes, as well as women whose resistance is lowered due to other conditions. Risk factors include oral contraceptive use, IUD use, young age at first intercourse, increased frequency of intercourse, receptive cunnilingus, diabetes, HIV or other immuno compromised states, chronic antibiotic use, and pregnancy.

Treating bacterial vaginosis will lower this risk. Treating the male partner of an infected woman does not seem to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Bacterial vaginosis usually does not cause other health problems and clears up in 2 or 3 days with antibiotics, but treatment goes on for 7 days. Bacterial vaginosis is the mostcommon cause of vaginal discharge.

What exactly is acupressure?

Acupressure is an ancient healing art developed in Asia over 6,000 years ago that deals with the human body and the flow of natural energy within the body. Acupressure treats the body as an energy system and works to relieve a persons individual symptoms by releasing blocked energy centres in the body. These centres are called acupoints and are found on energy pathways called meridians.

Acupressure is somewhat similar to acupuncture, only it uses fingers and thumbs to stimulate specific points instead of needles. Acupressure is actually considered to be the mother of acupuncture, as it was used long before needles came into the equation.

Acupressure is usually applied by hand, but can also be applied by elbow or by various hand-held devices. By using deep but gentle finger pressure on specific acupoints the blocked energy starts to release, allowing the body and mind to relax.

Acupressure is known to help in a number of positive ways – by reducing stress and tension, increasing blood circulation, aiding in the removal of toxic wastes, providing relief from head, neck and shoulder aches, increasing energy levels, stimulating speedy healing of injuries, increasing general well-being and last but not least – helping pregnant women to have a normal and safe birthing experience.

The latter is also called maternity acupressure or labor acupressure.

How can maternity or labor acupressure help pregnant women?

Maternity or labor acupressure is a holistic method that can have a remarkably beneficial effect in preparing the mother and the baby for the birth. It helps to induce labor naturally and is very effective in giving relief from labor pains without drugs and medications. During childbirth, it can be used to strengthen contractions, help the cervix to dilate and help to relax and stay calm.

A large number of pregnant women are using labor acupressure technique to induce labor naturally, if the pregnancy is overdue. Using acupressure to induce labor is as simple as locating sensitive spots on your skin and stimulating them by pressing the points with your thumb. Labor acupressure uses only application of pressure on specific spots on the skin, so it can be safely used at home with basic instructions. Labor acupressure is a very simple hands-on technique and extremely safe to use.

Studies show that over 80% of pregnant mothers using acupressure to induce labor naturally experience a normal and natural childbirth with significantly less complications than others who are not familiar with this technique. The use of labor acupressure also significantly shorten the total labor time. Women who have used acupressure during pregnancy and childbirth have been incredibly satisfied with the results of this method.

Do you feel as though you do not know what types of exercise are right for you now that you are pregnant? When I was pregnant with my child, I was uncertain about what exercises I should do and there was so much conflicting information on the Internet that I was not certain where to begin. I would like to share five simple exercises that are beneficial for you as well as your baby.

Swimming is a great form of low impact exercise that works out your entire body and also increases your stamina. Another great benefit is that the buoyancy will help you feel lighter which will help ease the pressure on your back and legs. You can start by swimming a few laps and increase the distance as you go.

Walking is one of the greatest forms of exercise available that you can do at any time and anywhere that you choose. It is the safest way to exercise and you can start by simply walking around the block and increase the distance as you go. While you are walking you can enjoy nature and also get away from the house for a little while to give you time to think while providing you with quality time that you can enjoy by yourself or with a friend.

Another great exercise is low-impact aerobics. You can look for a class that specializes in helping expecting mothers so that the instructor will gear the exercises accordingly while watching to make sure that you are not hurting yourself or your baby. These exercises will help improve your stamina as well as help you keep your weight down while feeling fit and healthy.

You can also try weight training but I want to stress that you should only use very light weights without ever putting stress on your back or stomach. You can start with 2 pounds doing three sets of 15 reps per exercise making sure that you do each exercise correctly. Try your best not to over exert yourself and stop immediately if you feel any pain or discomfort. This will help you improve your strength and should be used in conjunction with some type of aerobic exercise.

If you feel you have the flexibility and stamina, you can try yoga or Pilates for total body conditioning. This is a great low to no impact exercise and once again, you should find a class that specializes in expecting mothers so that the instructor will help you achieve your goals without you hurting yourself. Rest when you feel you need to and always listen to your body whenever it tells you to stop.

There are many forms of exercise and these are just five that you can begin during your pregnancy to increase your strength, stamina and flexibility as you get ready to deliver your baby. Before beginning any of these exercises, be sure to consult your doctor to see if any limitations will be placed upon your chosen exercise routine. Always drink plenty of water and stop exercising whenever you feel it is necessary. Have fun and I wish you and your baby the best of health during and after your pregnancy.

Vitamin B6 is one of eight water-soluble B vitamins. It was discovered in the 1930s during nutrition studies on rats. Vitamin B6 is exists in three major chemical forms: pyridoxine, pyridoxal, and pyridoxamine. Vitamin B6 performs as a coenzyme to carry out metabolic processes that affect the body’s use of protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Vitamin B6 also is involved in metabolism of protein and carbohydrates, the production of insulin, red and white blood cells.

Vitamin B6 is an especially important vitamin for maintaining healthy nerve and muscle cells. It is also take part in the production of DNA and RNA, the body’s genetic material. Vitamin B6 is necessary for proper absorption of vitamin B12 and for the production of red blood cells and cells of the immune system. It also helps to convert tryptophan to niacin, and may be found in nuts, meat, fish, eggs, wheat germs, milk, and whole grain foods.

Vitamin B6 can be found in, avocados, bananas, carrots, fortified cereals, green bean, hazelnuts (filberts), lentils, potatoes, salmon, shrimp, soybeans, spinach, sunflower seeds. The daily Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of vitamin B6 is various depend on age. For men and women between 19-50 years old can take 1.3 mg. Women over 50 years old need 1.5 mg, while men need 1.7 mg. An additional between 0.1-0.7 mg is needed during the pregnancy and lactation period. High amounts (100-200 mg per day or even more) may be recommended for certain conditions.

Deficiency of Vitamin B6 is rare, since most foods eaten contain this vitamin. Signs of a Vitamin B6 deficiency include peeling skin (dermatitis), cracked and sore lips, inflamed tongue and mouth, neuropathy, depression, anxiety, loss of libido, insomnia, water retention, inability to process glucose, itchy, body weight loss/gain, weakness, mental confusion, irritability, nervousness, inability to sleep, hyperactivity, anemia, skin lesions, and kidney stones. It is important to have a physician evaluate these symptoms so that appropriate medical care can be given.

Vitamin B6 is usually safe, at intakes up to 200 mg per day in adults. However, sustained periods of large doses may cause irreversible nerve damage. The excess of vitamin B6 may also lead to kidney stone formation. Although vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin and is excreted in the urine, very high doses of vitamin B6 over long periods of time may result in painful neurological symptoms known as sensory neuropathy. Symptoms of a pyridoxine overdose may include poor coordination, staggering, numbness, decreased sensation to touch, temperature, and vibration, and tiredness for up to six months.
