Fertility clinics have been issued new guidelines to help cut the rate of multiple pregnancies.

The aim is to encourage a policy of only transferring single embryos to the wombs of women undergoing In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment whenever possible.

Currently, most assisted conception in the UK involves transferring two fertilised embryos into the womb. This is intended to raise the chances of a successful pregnancy, but it also heightens the risk of multiple pregnancies.

Becoming pregnant with twins or triplets significantly increases the likelihood of miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth and low birth weight.

It can also lead to long-term health problems in children, such as cerebral palsy. Mothers bearing multiple pregnancies face dangers too, including the potentially life-threatening pregnancy condition pre-eclampsia, diabetes and heart disease.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), the fertility regulatory body, is asking clinics to reduce general multiple pregnancy rates from an average of 24% to 10% over the next three years.

The British Fertility Society (BFS), which represents clinics, and the Association of Clinical Embryologists (ACE), responded to the call by issuing new guidelines.

The proposals, published in the journal Human Fertility, set out ways in which IVF clinics can introduce an elective single embryo transfer (eSET) policy.

A key recommendation was for clinics to institute a system of carefully assessing patients to see if they are suitable for single embryo transfer.

Most of these patients will be relatively young. In the UK, 87% of multiple pregnancies occur in the first cycle of treatment in women under the age of 37. Under the guidelines, eSET is considered appropriate for women younger than 37 who have several high quality embryos.

Last weekend when we wait for out queue to see the doctor, I read some leaflet in the hospital… It state about the diabetes that might occurred to pregnancy women… hmmm, make me feel worried… well, this is our first baby and we don’t want anything bad happen…

I found some articles about this and select one of them to share it here. Hope it benefited all of you.

Diabetes Information and Tips

We all very well know that too many people suffer from diabetes, which can be a killer disease, but many of us do not know the answer to that elementary question, ‘What is diabetes? Here we basically try to answer that question. What is diabetes?Diabetes mellitus condition is, to put it very plainly, characterized by high levels of blood sugar. So what is actually diabetes caused by? This is mainly caused by the levels of insulin, when it becomes too low. There are mainly three types of diabetes: type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Now that here we have answered, very generally, the question ‘What is diabetes,’ let us go on to the first type of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes

Insulin, which our body needs to control the levels of sugar in our blood, is created by the beta cells in the pancreas, or, more specifically, in the Islets of Langerhans, which is a part of the pancreas. In Type 1 diabetes, these cells die because of the autoimmune system attacks it. This is the kind of diabetes that you normally see in children, though it is seen in adults, as well. Careful monitoring of the blood sugar levels and replacement of insulin is essentially the treatment for type 1 diabetes. While the treatment that cannot be stopped – it only controls and regulates, it does not cure – patients with type 1 diabetes can live a normal and long life as long as they take the necessary precautions.

Type 2 diabetes

The next thing that stems from the question ‘What is diabetes’ is; what Type 2 diabetes is. This combines the resistance to insulin to lack of secretion of insulin, which is harder to handle than Type 1 diabetes.

For this, first, the resistance must to be decreased or eliminated, which can be done through proper diet and exercise, and then the same treatment as for Type 1 diabetes can be administered.

Gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes is fairly common and is the sort of diabetes that affects women during pregnancy. Quite often, it might simply go away once the baby is born but it generally needs to be regulated carefully during the pregnancy to avoid complications.

While surfing the nets I found this news… It actually make me feel worried, as you know that my wife had a miscarriage before…

here is the news:

A study in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology reports women who suffer a second-trimester miscarriage are at high risk in a subsequent pregnancy of spontaneous preterm birth and repeat second-trimester miscarriage.

Researchers studied 182 women in three groups — 30 who had a spontaneous second-trimester miscarriage, 76 who had a spontaneous preterm birth, and 76 who had full-term deliveries. All of the women had a subsequent pregnancy beyond 14 weeks’ gestation.

In the subsequent pregnancies, the frequency of second-trimester loss was highest — at 27% — in women who suffered a second-trimester loss in the first pregnancy.

Second-trimester loss in subsequent pregnancies for women who had spontaneous preterm birth was 3%, while the percentage was 1% in the full-term delivery group.

Well, If you read our background before, you will know that me and my wife try very hard to get a baby. We try the modern and traditional method (but I have to admit that due to money constraint, not all method that we have try).

Recently my wife finally get pregnant. Unfortunately, after about 6 week, she is bleeding and had miscarriage!

It is a sad experiance for both of us. After about 6 years waiting for the moment, finally it happen but it is just for a very short period of times.

I am not sure why it happen, but prior to the incident, we went to a park and walk… Maybe because the condition of my wife that is difficult to get pregnant, plus with the ‘tired’, the bleeding happen. However, based on the doctor that we went to see, there are lots and lots of reason that can contribute to this… Based on the doctor, about 10-25% of the pregnancy may miscarriage! It just sad that we are fall into the 25% bracket and not the other 75% of the group!

Life goes on

Life will goes on even this thing happen. My wife feel down for few days (me too!) but we have to move forward. We will be more prepared next time, eat only healthy food, read lots and lots of book regarding pregnancy care etc. We are confident that if she did pregnant again, it will be better compared to the previous one. But one thing for sure is that she able to pregnant… and that is a good news btw…

Getting your body back to normal after a pregnancy can be a tricky business. When it comes to stretch marks and loose skin, there is no real effective method of treatment other than the surgical option of an abdominoplasty, a.k.a. a tummy tuck. Your skin is capable of expanding to accommodate a gradual weight gain, but when you are pregnant, it must expand relatively quickly to accommodate the growth of the baby. Consequently, the deeper layers of skin may tear forming thin white lines across your stomach. You may become frustrated (to say the least), and many women experience a big blow to their self esteem. However, a tummy tuck can remove most stretch marks and tighten any loose skin. In fact, deciding to go for a tummy-tuck seems a reasonable course of action considering that 130, 000 tummy tucks were performed in the United States in 2005.

Before jumping onto the tummy tuck train, some important issues should be considered. A tummy tuck requires invasive surgery; therefore information on the matter should be gathered in order to determine whether or not it will truly benefit your life.

Tummy tucks can leave permanent scars

The surgery will leave a scar that runs from hip to hip, unless you have decided on a mini-tuck, in which case the scar will be about 6 inches long. A scar can take up to 9 months to fade, and until then, it will actually appear to worsen. However, the incision is made along natural creases in your skin, and is easily covered by underwear and bikinis.

Tummy tucks can cause problems with future pregnancies

Most surgeons will advise their patients to wait until after their last pregnancy before undergoing abdominal plastic surgery. The body’s expansion during a pregnancy can cause the stomach muscles to separate again; so if you are planning more than one child, it is best to put the tummy tuck on hold.

Tummy tucks are not magical

If you are unhappy with the look of your body, a tummy tuck can be a step in helping you to achieve your ideal figure. However, because of its highly invasive nature, you must be prepared to take good care of your brand new tummy. The recovery time can take up to 3 weeks. You must protect your stomach from the sun before going under the knife. Smokers will need to put away their lighters for 2 weeks before and after the surgery. Exercise can help speed up the healing process (although not immediately after the surgery). A healthy diet is important as well, but nothing too severe as your body needs the appropriate nutrition in order to properly heal.

Do some research

It is important to choose a surgeon who is properly qualified. Not only must he/she be board certified, but also certified by a reputable board. Start by looking into the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Also verify that your surgeon is qualified to perform several kinds of abdominal plastic surgery and not just tummy tucks.

If a full traditional tummy tuck seems too daunting, and/or too expensive, you could opt for a mini-tummy tuck. The surgery is less invasive, recovery time is shorter, and the scar is smaller. It is worth a consideration if you are unhappy with the post-pregnant state of your body.

Your Eyes and Pregnancy

What you need to know Pregnancy is a truly wondrous experience. Every woman is aware that there are changes to her body that are entirely natural and obvious but many do not know or consider the effects of pregnancy upon the eyes.

It is important that you know of the changes that take place with your vision and eye health but do not be alarmed.

The vast majority of reasonably healthy women suffer no lasting eye health or vision problems during pregnancy and very many do not notice any changes whatsoever.

Natural bodily changes take place during pregnancy due to hormonal effects upon many organs, including the eyes.

These normal eye changes are brought about by a progressive decrease in the pressure of the fluid within the eye and associated fluid retention in the ocular tissues

Do Not Be Alarmed.

1. The sensitivity of the cornea progressively decreases throughout pregnancy, particularly during the last three months. This results in a risk to contact lens wearers who may damage the surface of the cornea more than usual. This can lead to red, sore eyes and an intolerance of contact lenses.

It is unlikely to cause any problems if there is no visual impairment or only corrective glasses are worn.

2. Ocular fluid retention can affect refraction and results in a temporary change in vision. Spectacle or contact lens wearers can find their existing prescription is either too weak or too strong. It is best to avoid having an eye test until six weeks or more after giving birth as it more than probable that vision will return to normal.

3. The pressure of the fluid in the eye, known as intra-ocular pressure, decreases. It is unlikely that this will be noticeable unless Glaucoma was diagnosed and being treated prior to pregnancy. Glaucoma is caused by raised intra-ocular pressure and is a serious condition affecting the ocular nerve. The resulting decrease in intra-ocular pressure during pregnancy is an advantageous side effect enjoyed by sufferers.

4. Some pregnant women suffer from dry eyes, which are normally only temporary and will disappear after giving birth. Ask your optrometrist for eye drops. He will know which drops you should use that will not have any detrimental effects on you or your baby. Otherwise the traditional and well known home beauty treatments will solve the problem. Rest with cotton wool soaked in witch hazel or simply cucumber slices laid on your eyes can only be beneficial. Try an eye mask straight out of the fridge.

5. Puffy or swollen areas around the eyelids are a frequent side effect during pregnancy. Drinking plenty of water and keeping to a healthy diet will actually limit water retention and relieve any discomfort.

6. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can lead to migraine headaches and sensitivity to bright lights.

Be sure to check with your medical advisors before taking any medication to relieve the symptoms.

There are pre-existing health problems that can affect the sight which should be considered before deciding to become pregnant and should be fully discussed with your physician and ophthalmologist.

Ideally, all children everywhere would be born innately healthy, both at the moment of birth and during later development. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Many children throughout the world – even in the most “modern” countries with advanced health care – are born each year with medical conditions that will lead to disability at some point in the future. Others develop conditions later on that also result in difficulties in managing daily living activities and/or learning activities.

In the US alone, more than 4 million children under the age of 18 are classified as having a disability due to a physical or mental health impairment.

Let’s take a look at some of the more common conditions that can lead to disability in children.

1. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD)

AD/HD is a disorder that makes it hard for children to sit still, control their behavior, and pay attention. It is usually diagnosed before the age of 7, but not always. Doctors aren’t sure what causes AD/HD, but studies support the theory that it is related to an imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. There is no quick treatment for AD/HD, but the symptoms can be managed.

2. Autism/Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD)

Autism is a kind of PDD. Aspergers Syndrome is closely related as well. The US Disabilities Education Act defines autism as, “a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age 3, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance.” Children with autism have a wide range of abilities, intelligence, and behaviors. Early diagnosis is important. Again, experts are not sure what causes autism, but the symptoms can be managed. Many children who have autism grow up to be productive, functioning adults.

3. Cerebral Palsy (CP)

CP is a condition resulting from an injury to the part of the brain that controls the nerves and muscles. This injury can occur before birth, during delivery, or shortly after birth. CP can be mild, moderate or severe. Disability can range from being slightly clumsy to being confined to a wheelchair. Children with CP can have learning disabilities, sensory problems, and sometimes mental retardation.

4. Sensory Problems

Sensory problems can include both hearing impairment (deafness) and blindness. Hearing loss can occur at any time, from infancy on. The causes vary widely. Although a hearing loss in and of itself doesn’t affect a child’s intellectual capacity or ability to learn, it may require special adaptations. Blindness can also have a number of different causes. Severity can range from partially sighted to low vision to legally blind to totally blind. Visual handicaps can create many obstacles to a child’s ability to grown and learn.

5. Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is the most common chromosomally-related cause of mental retardation. For unknown reasons, a child with Down syndrome ends up with an extra chromosome, which interferes with the orderly development of the body and brain. Some of the more common signs of Downs are poor muscle tone, slanted eyes with folds of skin at the inner corners, short, broad hands and feet, and a short neck with a small head. Children with Down syndrome may also have other health problems. There tends to be a wide variation in mental and physical abilities among the Down population, but early intervention is the best course of action to prevent as much disability as possible.

6. Learning Disabilities

Learning disability is a term that means the child has trouble learning and using specific skills. Some of the more common skills affected are reading, writing, speaking, reasoning, and doing math. Learning disabilities can vary greatly from child to child. Experts believe that learning disabilities are caused by differences in how a person’s brain works and how it processes information. Children with learning disabilities are not stupid or lazy. Indeed, they often have average or even above average intelligence. There is no cure, but children can be taught to work around their disability and learn successfully.

7. Speech and Language Impairments

Speech and language impairments refer to problems in communication and related areas such as oral motor function. Causes can include hearing loss, neurological disorders, brain injury and cleft lip/palate. Timely intervention will usually prevent severe disability as a result of speech impairments.

8. Spina Bifida

One of the most common “birth defects,” spina bifida is an incomplete closure of the spinal column during a baby’s development while still in the womb. It can range from mild to severe, with the degree of disability corresponding. Symptoms can include muscle weakness, poor bowel and bladder control, and a buildup of fluid in the brain. With therapy and adaptations, children with spina bifida are usually able to function in their environments successfully.
